May 10, 2017 at 10:20 pmI really had to respond to this as I just returned from India and saw the use of Aadhar. While aadhar started as a means to provide welfare benefit to genuinely entitled people it has now been re-purposed into a MANDATORY card for all Indians and can be misused easily to turn the state into a police state. You can’t have a bank account, mobile phone, travel on planes/trains, tax filing without aadhar. The govt. will know every transaction done by everyone in India. Also the biometrics is not without issue. My dad’s fingerprint doesn’t read anymore due to age related degeneration and he can’t be verfied anymore. There is an alternate iris scan available but not many places can do an iris scan.
It also doesn’t prevent bad data. To get the card (which has been outsourced to cheap subcontractors) you can show a dodgy birth certificate which is not verified and just gets accepted to make the card. The same when name, birthdate, address has to be updated.
